CORNERS Ersboda – turning Umeå inside out

A city is made of many small segments, each with its own personality. Some parts are hidden, some traditions have been destroyed, some others re-invented. Neighborhoods are where people live, work, play and learn. They are sometimes peaceful places and sometimes disrupted, challenging.

CORNERS brings a platform of international artists & animators into direct contact and co-creation with people living in Ersboda, both Östra and Västra: a diverse and complicated area about 6 km outside of the city center… or?…

…Where is the center? Who remains at the “edges”?

17 professionals from 8 corners of Europe: Northern Ireland, The Basque Country, Ukraine, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Sweden, Poland, Bulgaria. In Ersboda. They engage in participatory works with children, young people, adults and visitors. They share with active partners like:

  • Ersboda Folkets hus
  • Ersboda Slöjdföreningen
  • Kulturistan Ersboda/Studieförbundet Vuxenskolan i Västerbotten
  • skolor i Ersboda
  • ABF Ersboda

We started this journey with Umeå 2014 already a few years ago. We shared artists and stories on six Xpeditions to European corners, including Västerbotten. Now we return. Art meets audience. People co-create across national/cultural borders.

Hide or Reveal

The publication “Hide or Reveal” sums the experience of two-weeks-long travellings, meetings of new places and constant change of location. It is a result of an artistic research that took place in the framework of two CORNERS Xpeditions: Balkan and …

In Between

Observation in philosophical terms is the process of filtering sensory information through the thought process. Input is received via hearing, sight, smell, taste, or touch and then analyzed through either rational or irrational thought. What happens if the observed object knows that he/she is being observed and the observation also changes positions so that the observer is being observed by the object? As artists we can play with these roles and also with the purpose of our observations which in contrast to the science can have a more open and indistinct objective and perhaps use different methods.

Land is necessary for all Peoples. So is Light. For some, the Land is the core of their existence and culture. So is light. Occupations of Land and forced moving are ongoing. For this project, the Peoples are essential. So is light.

Fifteen- twenty kids from local community and five artists from different disciplines create and present a live performance during a two-week joyful and creative work. Children’s stories from corners of Europe are the ground for a workshop with music, movement, …

Put yourself in my place

Depending on our social background, we attribute different values to artworks, but also to different behavior patterns and to biological traits such as race, or sex. The consequence of this is always, inequality. Milijana Babić and Ida Hansson are two artists who developed their own methodologies for understanding differences in how society approaches art, through a specific long term continuous performance of swapping lives. By entering the life of the other, they did not play some kind of imitation game, but brought their own personalities into a different context.
